Here are five ways to skip the time, stress and expense of a big spring break trip this year by planning a staycation instead.
You don’t have to go far for an adventure this spring break
Spring is here and that means that the kiddos will soon be out on break. Skip the time, stress and expense of a big trip this year by planning a staycation instead. Child psychologist and author David Elkin, PhD writes, “When we offer our children opportunities to explore this new and exciting world… we open them up to powerful learning experiences they could not encounter in any other way.” These simple activities are fun for the whole family and give kids the opportunity to learn and grow through exploration and play. Sprinkle them throughout the week to give the kids something to look forward to and entertain them all week!
1. Go Camping in Your Own Backyard
Step off your back porch and into the great outdoors! This is such a fun activity because it’s hands-on and allows every member of the family to participate Older kids can help pitch the tent, while younger kids will have a blast helping you make snacks like sandwiches and trail mix before your “trip.” Lean into the experience by doing all the things you’d do on an off-site camping trip: explore nature, go bird-watching and look for other animals! Don’t forget to end the night with some s’mores and campfire songs!
2. Head to the Museum
Museum days do the double duty of wearing the kids out while teaching them something new. While visiting a dedicated children’s museum is an obvious winner, remember that art, history and science museums often offer family-oriented programs and events. Check a museum’s website for details about such events and see which ones might be appropriate for your children. If you’re in Chicago, specialty museums, like the Chicago Sports Museum and Pritzker Military Museum & Library are also great choices for little sports fans and budding history buffs!

3. Get Outside and Be Active
Oh. My. Word. Was this not the longest winter ever? After spending so much time cooped up indoors all winter, the kids will appreciate just getting out of the house and running around a little. Whether you choose to walk, jog, bike or even skate, the whole family will have fun soaking up the sun while you make your way through a local trail or park of your choice. Have the kids help you pack a picnic with sandwiches, fruit and nuts before you go.
4. Spend the Night at a Hotel
This activity gives your kids all the excitement of packing their bags, piling into the car and going somewhere new without the stress associated with a longer trip to a far-away place. Pile onto the bed with your kids, get room service and order a movie you’ll all enjoy. For an added bonus, find a hotel with an indoor pool where you and the kids can splash around like you’re on a tropical getaway.
5. Have a Movie Marathon
There’s nothing I love more than curling up on the couch with a good movie…or three! Work with your kids to choose a theme and movie lineup. If you have space, build an indoor fort that you can use as your own private theater for the night. Order a pizza with your favorite toppings and get comfortable. Don’t forget the popcorn!
