Brighten the Year’s Darkest Days With These Self-Care Ideas

Even if you’re naturally upbeat, you’ve got to admit that winter can be a bummer at times. Not only are the temps super chilly, but Mr. Sunshine doesn’t appear as often. I can totally understand the temptation to just crawl under the covers and watch Netflix all day—but mamas should try to keep their family active during the winter.

There’s no question a sedentary lifestyle is not good for our brains (or our bellies!). Now more than ever, it’s important to find ways to occupy your kiddos’ time…besides letting them play Fortnite!

If you and your family need a little extra self-care during the coldest days, try adding these activities to your roster!

Ways To Beat The Winter Blues – Self-Care Ideas For The Whole Family

Enjoy Some Outdoors Time

Ok, I know this sounds crazy, especially if you live somewhere that gets cold and snowy. But trust me: getting some fresh air will do you and your family more good than you may think!

No matter what time of year it is, one of my favorite self-care activities is going for a walk in my neighborhood. Get your family bundled up and enjoy a nice walk around the block to get your mental and physical wellness back into gear!

If you and your little ones love the snow, make a day of playing in your own winter wonderland! You can hold a snowman-making contest, hold a sledding race or find a local outdoor skating rink, to name a few.

Start a Family Journal

When it’s cold and miserable outside, it can be hard to feel grateful for all the amazing things in your life. To help teach your kiddos about the importance of gratitude, why not start a family journal?

Each week, get the family together to name a few things they are thankful for that week. As time goes on, you’ll see just how many blessings you and your family have.

Bonus tip: You can put your list up somewhere everyone can see in the house, so you never forget to be grateful!

Spend Time with Your Village

You know I had to include the village here! It’s easy for a lot of us to feel stuck in our homes in the winter, which makes it a really important time to connect with loved ones.

If you’re able to get out, take your family over to a neighbor’s house for dinner or game night. Feel like you’re snowed in? No sweat: give your extended family a call on FaceTime for some much-needed catching up!

Declutter Your House

Nothing feels better than cleaning and organizing your house. I know I feel more at peace when everything in my house is in order!

This is a fun one to get the whole family involved in too. Assign each family member a different cleaning or organizational job and get to work! Whether you spend the weekend or just a day organizing, I promise it’ll keep your mind off the dark days of winter.

Encourage Quiet Time for Everyone

I know a lot of you mamas are thinking this is impossible for your squirmy little ones! But everyone needs some time to themselves for quiet reflection.

Encourage everyone in your family to spend at least 10 minutes once a week to enjoy time to themselves. Maybe it’s for meditation, journaling or reflecting on their goals. This will give mamas a chance to breathe and relax too!

So, what do you think of my wintertime tips? Are you planning to try any of these ideas at home? If so, I’d love to know how they worked out for you. Be sure to reach out to me via DMs @florenceann.romano!
