Anyone who has followed me for a while knows how much of an advocate I am for the village. When I was growing up, I was lucky enough to have so many amazing people to raise me into the woman I am today. Between my grandparents, parents and family friends, I grew up learning that building your village is essential.

Helps Build a Connection With Your Community
The good news is you never have to do it all alone! Humans have been raising children as a community for hundreds of years. Instead of feeling like you have to do it all, surround yourself with people who will love and support your family like you do! While it might feel scary at first to let others into your children’s lives, it helps you build strong relationships outside of your family. This can be your next-door neighbor, a family down the street or a trusted relative who lives nearby. The more, the merrier!
Allows You to Practice Vulnerability
Part of building a village means nurturing relationships so that you have people to turn to when times get tough. As you grow your village, you will have moments where you want or need support from someone else. This might sound intimidating but it is a great opportunity to practice vulnerability and ask for help! Believe it or not, asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness, and you will only be surrounded by more love because of it.
Opportunity To Support Others
When you ask for help, make sure to offer to return the favor. You never know, there might be someone in your village who needs help but is too afraid to ask for it. What a perfect chance to show your village how much they mean to you! For example, trade babysitting nights with a friend or offer to pick up groceries for an elderly neighbor. Then, offer to do the same for them and insist that they take you up on it (that part is important). By showing people that you have their back, they will show up by having yours!
